Billy's first trade was that of a welder in the Glasgow shipyards in the early 60s, something he gave up at the end of the decade to become a folk singer. Over the following few years he made the step into comic performance and has never looked back.

Billy doesn't go for competition awards, probably because they didn't exist back then, but he has been given the prestigious accolade of the Greatest Stand Up Comedian by Channel 4 in 2007 and 2010. He received the BAFTA Lifetime Achievement award in 2003 and a CBE from the Queen the same year. But it's no Laughing Horse.

Billy Connolly is a ranter and rambler, able to take the audience on wild tangents lasting the majority of his sets but still come back to where he left off.

There's no subject that's taboo for Billy but one flick of his trademark wild hair and a glance at his garish suits will win over the audience in an instant. To even mention the subjects of Billy's shows would be a novel in itself, and sometimes you don't even know if he planned to say 20 minutes on that particular issue himself.

Billy's television appearances are numerous to say the list. One of the greatest chat show guests you can dream of, just ask Michael Parkinson, Billy has been on them all and also taken himself over to the greats of American shows such as David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson and Jon Stewart, not to mention a plethora of travel programmes in which Billy tours the globe with his banjo in strange vehicles.

Like other great stand ups, Billy has also ventured into film acting, with notable appearances in Indecent Proposal, Still Crazy, The Last Samurai and Mrs Brown, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA. Billy also appears in the latest film version of Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black.

For those not familiar with his work, Billy Connolly is not one of these comics who people laud over but then is a bit over-rated. Billy Connolly is the real deal and is still performing stand up to this day to massive sold out crowds. Billy Connolly is truly one of the greatest stand up comedians of all time.
