Full Biography

Chris Rock is an accomplished film and television actor, writer, talk show host and director. He is also one of the greatest stand-up comedians alive today and let’s not forget the Emmy Award-winning executive producer, co-creator and narrator of Everybody Hates Chris.

Chris was born in South Carolina in February 7th 1965, but raised raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York – where he took inspiration from events in his life growing up there for Everybody Hates Chris.

His mother, Rosalie, was a teacher and social worker with the mentally handicapped; his father, Julius Rock, was a former truck driver and newspaper deliveryman, but sadly he died in 1988 after ulcer surgery. Chris’ younger brothers Tony and Kenny are also in the entertainment business, while his older brother, Charles, died in 2006 due to a long struggle with alcoholism.

Chris has stated that he was influenced by the likes of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and Bill Cosby, although he also believes his performing style has been heavily influenced by his paternal grandfather, Allen Rock, who was a preacher. Any fans out there will certainly be able to see Chris' almost-evangelical style whenever he takes the stage.

He started honing his stand up comedy routines on the US stand up circuit during the 80s, before realized a long-held dream when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for a three-year tenure beginning in 1989.

Chris has since arguably redefined stand-up comedy with his smart and incisive takes on race, relationships and society. And it’s not just the fans who have heaped praise on his live work; he has won three Emmy Awards and garnered 15 nominations, has earned two Grammy Awards and has been nominated and won a multitude of other awards throughout his career.

If you want to see just how good he is, we recommend you check out his towering performances on HBO comedy specials Bring The Pain, Never Scared and Bigger & Blacker.

His other TV work includes The Chris Rock Show, created in the wake of his two award-winning specials, aired in the States for four seasons. This show saw him honoured with seven Emmy nominations and received the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program in 1999.

Not content with rocking the small screen, Chris has also appeared in several movies, including as The Longest Yard, Down to Earth, Nurse Betty, Dogma, Lethal Weapon 4, and Beverly Hills Cop II. He has also lent his voice to the animated features Madagascar, Osmosis Jones, Doctor Dolittle and Bee Movie&rdquo.
