A week after Ben Elton ranted about the state of ‘mean’ television panel shows, the comedian himself has been forced to apologise over one of his own jokes.
The Evening Standard reported that Elton, whilst appearing on Australia’s Good News Week, joked that the Queen was a “sad, little old lady” and the Duke of Edinburgh was a “mad old bigot”.
The Prince of Wales didn’t get off scot-free either being branded a “disillusioned ex-hippy”.
A spokesman for Elton read out the following apology:
“Ben Elton apologises for any offence which may have been caused. He was making a joke about Australian republicanism, pointing out that the Queen and her family were…reflective of the modern rainbow population they represented.”
Tut tut.
