We all know what Teri Hatcher’s been getting up to on Wisteria Lane, but whatever happened to her bespectacled superhero beau Dean Cain?
Born Dean George Tanaka on July 31st 1966, Dean grew up in Malibu, California and counted Rob Lowe and Charlie Sheen as classmates.
Excelling at sports, Dean secured a football scholarship to Princeton University where he studied history.
After graduating from Princeton University, Cain signed with the Buffalo Bills - an NFL football team, but a knee injury during training prevented him from playing a single game. It wasn’t all bad though, he had Brooke Shields's shoulder to cry on (the pair dated for two years).
His sports career over before it began, Cain turned to acting, appearing in commercials and then gaining parts on US TV shows A Different World and Life Goes On.
In 1992 Dean was cast as Brenda’s new boyfriend in Beverly Hills 90210 which paved the way for Dean’s biggest of his career as the Man of Steel in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
Running for four seasons between 1993-1997 and for sometime after, Dean Cain and Clark Kent became synonymous with one another in the hit Superman show, but unfortunately though, it was cancelled in its fourth season due to falling ratings with an unresolved cliff-hanger, featuring a mysterious infant left on Lois and Clark’s doorstep.
Since the Lois & Clark bubble burst, Deano has actually had steady work with a CV brimming with television appearances and film credits, but hardly any have made any impact at the box office to catapult him into the limelight once more.
Some titles worth checking out simply for their titles alone - Dead & Deader – a half-man half-zombie flick, Dragon Fighter – the name speaks for itself, and Max Havoc: Ring of Fire – a world class boxer turning his hand to photography (sounds more like the aftermath of a bad vindaloo...)
Wading through the career kryptonite however, ‘notable’ roles include a four-episode stint in sitcom Hope & Faith (axed in 2006) and appearances in CSI: Miami and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Dean had a recurring role in casino drama Las Vegas, as Casey Manning but was killed off by...wait for it...death by giant squid! Totally plausible. A cause of death not used nearly enough these days.
Also in 2007, like many other veterans of the saga, Cain appeared in the latest, and arguably the most successful Superman franchise, Smallville as the immortal Dr. Curtis Knox.
Behind the camera, Dean had a son, Christopher, born in 2000, with former Playboy model Samantha Torres although the pair are no longer together. Here’s what he looks like of late
Many more roles are in the works for Dean but none look as though they’ll be making headlines anytime soon.
Maybe he should take a leaf out of Teri’s book and become a frumpy housewife.
