8 Shocking Facts Matt LeBlanc Let Slip In An Intimate Radio Interview
Did you know Matt LeBlanc was destined to be a blue collar worker, in keeping with family tradition?
The actor spoke about his unexpected rise to global fame on a radio show with The Hollywood Reporter and here are the coolest things we learned about him:
1, Matt LeBlanc was almost a carpenter
According to Matt, there was a very 'blue collar' ideal in LeBlanc's family, where "everyone had some kind of tool in their hand". He worked as a carpenter's apprentice doing handiwork jobs after his parents split up: "I could have been framing houses in the snow in New England in winter, instead of telling jokes on TV."
2, Matt dropped out of college
Matt dropped out of a carpentry course at Boston college after one semester, because he thought it was silly to pay to do things he already knew how to do!
3, A love interest invited Matt to meet her modelling manager
Matt was visiting a pal in New York, when he met a girl in the street (of course he did) and went along with her to an audition. She introduced him to her manager, who liked him and put him forward for commercials.
4, So he was cast in Coca-Cola and Heinz ketchup adverts

5, When Friends came along he had $11 in his pocket
Those rumours are true - Matt LeBlanc was completely broke when he tried out for Friends. The reason? "I waited too long to get a real job." He'd moved to LA and filmed 18 episodes of 'TV 101', similar to 'Beverley Hills 90210', which then got cancelled. He worked on shows called 'Married With Children', 'Top of The Heap' and 'Vinny and Bobby', coasting on the money he'd made from those until auditioning for 'Friends' with almost nothing left in his bank account.
6, Matt auditioned for Friends at least four times
For his first interview, he arrived with a huge cut on his face: "I had a few drinks and fell. I told Marta Kauffman and she thought it was funny."
In Matt's final interview, he read with Courteney Cox and he thought the jokes worked, but said: "the audition process is horrible. It's such a hard thing. You're at home and you're rehearsing... there are so many variables in that formula".
The last 'Joey' he was up against arrived dress in a full cowboy outfit: "I'm thinking, we're very different. Luckily it went my way."
7, Matt explained how the whole "How you doin?" thing came about
"The way I said it one time was funny and it kind of stuck. If you go back and look through the catalogue of episodes, I don't know if I said it that many times." He also said he never thought Joey was dumb, just "incorrect", living in a "parallel universe".
8, He thinks Friends would be a TOTALLY different show today
Matt said of the biggest sitcom of all time: "Nobody knew what it was gonna turn into", but would a reboot work now?
"That show was about a finite period in your life, after school and before your life really gets started. And if you think about the end of Friends, now their lives are starting - Ross and Rachel go off, Monica and Chandler move to the suburbs with the babies, Phoebe and Mike are married, Joey goes off. It was that time prior to that where they were each other's emotional support system - that's what that show was about. After that? It's a different show."
He added, "That was what the magic of that show was, how - no pun intended - they were there for each other".
D'awww! You can listen to the entire fascinating interview here on The Hollywood Reporter.
