Here's Why Jennifer Aniston And David Schwimmer Actually Wanted Pay Cuts
Any Friends fan worth their (tiny) salt knows that Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston earned $1m per EPISODE during the last series of Friends.
But did you know that David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston (Ross 'n' Rachel, who else) campaigned for a pay cut?
Being an ensemble cast, the core six actors and actresses started out earning the same wages in Series 1. But as Ross and Rachel's storyline picked up the pace, so did their pay packets. Being best pals IRL, the six core actors decided they all wanted to be equal - so Schwimmer and Aniston soon insisted everyone was paid the same, throughout ten seasons of the show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, talks began around Series 3, where they were “spurred by a lucrative Friends syndication deal, which would fetch about $4 million per episode for Warner Bros., or at least $192 million on the syndication rights for the first two seasons alone".
The New York Times added: “Stars of hit shows often threaten to boycott their series in pursuit of higher salaries. What is unusual is this cast’s effort to use its solidarity as leverage. Warner Brothers consciously built the group as an ensemble, originally allowing only full group interviews and pictures.”
People magazine noted that Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer’s “salaries went down in order to match the rest of the cast’s.”
So there you go! They really were there for each other when the rain started to pour. Isn't it beautiful!?
