Writer Explains Why Frank Buffay Turned Up As An Entirely Different Character In Friends
You might remember season 2's "The One With The Baby On The Bus" (check out the brilliant clip above) as the moment the world was introduced to ‘Smelly Cat’ (yep, we've got that clip too):
But did you know it was also the scene of the greatest Friends conspiracy controversy of our lifetime?
A little recap: Phoebe was told that she couldn’t play at Central Perk anymore due to a new musician in the cafe, and was forced to play outside on the street for cash.
But then one man walks past and drops a condom in there and, well, would you look who it is: it’s Phoebe’s brother Frank! He later retrieves it, and Friends fans have long squabbled over the meaning of the scene.
Was he intentionally hired with foresight, to set up their future familial relationship? Especially considering it’s a condom, and he later asks Phoebe to be a surrogate for him and his wife.
Well, one of the show’s writers, Betsy Borns, has put an end to the conspiracy once and for all (and you might not like the answer)
She told Refinery29: “He was an actor that was used by the executive producers before. They liked him, so they decided to use him more because they liked working with him.”
So it wasn’t foreshadowing? “No. It was just one of those things,"
Damn. Still, we'll pretend she didn't say that. It's more fun this way.
