Friends Creators Declined A More Diverse Cast Than Six Straight White People
With millennials re-watching Friends for the first time in a long time, people are noticing some... stuff.
We're all familiar with the common criticism of Friends being a bit vanilla.
As wonderful and hilarious as it is, we think it's fair when people question the representation issue of the cast being six straight, white, able-bodied people.
Okay, so although Ross dated Julie in Season 2 and Joey and Ross dated Dr. Charlie Wheeler in Season 9, we do think they could have tried a bit harder to be more inclusive...
It turns out that this wasn't always going to be the case, though.
Karey Burke (EVP, Freeform Programming & Development), was in the room when Marta Kauffman and David Crane pitched Friends and told The Hollywood Reporter that when execs tried to push for a more diverse cast than six straight white people, the creators pushed back; "they wrote the script with specific people in mind."
She explained that she thinks things wouldn't be quite the same in 2018, saying: "I think now it might be a different conversation. I also think that was Gen X, and I think Millenials and subsequently Gen Z are far more diverse generations," Burke said. "And I think to honestly serve those generations...it might feel a little tone deaf to not be more inclusive."
Maybe it's time for a budding new writer to concoct a new take on a similar endeavor. And for the creators to welcome that change with open arms.
Let's keep the fierce fashion sense, though.
That's one thing that doesn't need compromising, as we recently discovered when Gen Z went gaga for Friends fashion...
