8 Secrets Impractical Jokers' Murr Spilled In Intimate 'Awakened' Interview
Impractical Jokers' cutest lil' ferret has written a thriller - and we've been a *little* excited about it.
James 'Murr' Murray released a sneak peek of Awakened just last week, and we just can't get enough. He's sending out personalised videos to everyone who can prove they've bought a copy, and he's doing book signings across America.
Now he's chatted to Fox News' radio channel, explaining what it took to realise one of his biggest dreams, telling Brian Kilmeade how he, Sal, Joe and Q came up with the premise for their hit prank series and what we can expect from his book.
Here are our fave bits from the interview:
1, He studied English, with a minor in Marketing
"I've got a degree in English, I always wanted to be an author and write a book."
[On the industry noticing his novel thanks to his Impractical Jokers fame] "It's crazy. What a crazy world."
2, He wrote Awakened BEFORE he was famous
"I've got a degree in English, I always wanted to be an author and write a book. I had this idea for this crazy tale that takes place in the subways of New York city... so I spent a year of my life long before Jokers writing the book. I sent it out to every publisher in town... and it got returned to me unopened. It was heartbreaking. Fast forward to now, and Jokers, I sent it to Harper Collins and they bought the trilogy for it."
3, And the plot sounds TERRIFYING
"I always was obsessed with this idea. It's an extension of the (New York) Z train in the middle of the East River, underwater. It's the hub where all the trains connect. The inaugural run of the train, on the train itself, is the Mayor's wife and 100 lucky New Yorkers who like, won the lottery. When the train rolls into the underwater pavilion, all the passengers are missing. The cars are covered in blood, the windows are shattered outward. So it's this great mystery, what happened in that subway tunnel? Then come to realise that what's going on underneath New York City is far more terrifying than anything you could possibly have imagined." WOAH.
4, Murr's sending personalised videos to fans who buy the book
"If you buy a copy of the book from my website (Awakenednovel.com) and send the proof of purchase to email@example.com I send you a video of whatever you want me to say - so 'Happy Birthday Grandma', 'Happy Anniversary'. Last weekend I did 600 Father's Day videos, and I hit all my deadlines!"
5, His comedy troupe 'The Tenderloins' was named after a silly joke
"We had a list in high school of words you'd be slightly embarrassed to say in high school, you know, 'tenderloin', 'culotte', and that was at the top of the list."
6, They came up with 'Impractical Jokers' while eating chicken parm
"I got some intel [from his marketing job back in 2009] that hidden camera shows were coming back.. some kind of new twist on the format. So I got together with the guys over a chicken parm, as we do, and we started brainstorming ideas. We came up with the idea for Jokers, like an upside-down prank show where the joke is on us. Nobody else is hurt in the making of it, it takes away the anxiety you feel from a typical prank show. You feel for us, and we're willing participants - we do it so you don't have to."
7, They've been greenlit for Series 8!
"We've sold out Madison Square Garden. The crazy thing about this is 12 years ago we did a show in Manhattan, and two people bought tickets, Two. For $5 each, and the theatre cost $65 to rent, so we lost $55 on the night. We had to split the $55 four ways! We did the show for like half a person, each."
8, All four Jokers have AWESOME side projects to check out
"Sal does solo stand up, Q's writing a graphic novel coming out soon, Joe does tons of work for anti-bullying and pet adoption, and he's basically the producer for Impractical Jokers, he oversees all of the production, and I have of course, Awakened, and this is going to be a trilogy. So we all of us have these different creative outlets that honestly, help us stay friends and help us stay in love with each other."
WE LOVE YOU, MURR!
