Celebrating 30 years in the business, London’s famed Comedy Store has announced plans to open its first overseas branch in Mumbai, India.
Teaming up with Indian businessman Amar Aggarwal, the Store’s founder Don Ward, “aims to provide a platform for Indians to come forward and try their hand at stand-up”, the BBC reports.
Being one of the most populated cities in the word with 25 million people, Ward says it seemed a “natural venue for a Comedy Store” and wants to find new international talent to join the plethora of talent discovered in the 30 years of the Store’s history, including Ben Elton and Paul Merton.
Three of the Comedy Store’s top comedians have been performing in the past week to sell-out crowds in the city. Sean Meo jokes, “this is my first time in India and I love it, luckily I have not fallen ill or had an upset stomach - but I have not eaten any food or drunk any water for five days!” and Tonkinson notes, "Who said Indians were repressed? They have laughed as loud as any crowd I can remember and it's been an honour to have been invited to come and work in Mumbai."
It looks like this could be the start of a grand international plan if all goes well, which according to reports, looks promising.
Mumbai’s Comedy Store is due to open in December.
