Irish politican Alan Shatter has slammed Tommy Tiernan as a bigoted fool, after the comic ranted against Jews, claiming he would have killed twice as many in the Holocaust.
The Fine Gael TD, who is Jewish, took offence at Tiernan's diatribe at the Electric Picnic festival in Co. Laois, where he raged about 'these Jews, these f***ing Jews'.
'F***ing Christ killing bastards,' he said. 'F*** six million? I would have got 10 or 12 million out of that. No f***ing problem. Two at a time they would have gone. Hold hands, get in there, leave us your teeth and your glasses...'
Quoted the Sunday Tribute this weekend, Mr Shatter said: ' He has quite clearly brought to the surface his own prejudices.
'Rather than this being a comic presentation, it sounds more like the deranged demented ramblings of a complete fool, which I don't think reasonable people would remotely take seriously. Quite clearly what he had to say goes beyond the bounds of anything that is acceptable and certainly doesn't deserve being described as comedy.'
Tiernan's comments came in a Q&A session when once audience member asked him about people who come up to him after gigs having taken offence.
The comic said there should be an understanding between audience and performer that a comedy stage is 'a special protected environment where people know that nothing they say is being taken seriously' - before illustrating exactly the sort of comments that get him into trouble when quoted away from that environment.
