Peter Kay is to host this year’s Royal Variety Performance, ITV has announced.

The show takes place on December 7, and for the first time since 1955 will come from "the home of British variety", Blackpool.

The town’s Opera House, the largest theatre in the UK outside of London with a seating capacity of 3000, will host to the show in the presence of  The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

Kay said: "It's an honour and a privilege to be asked to host the Royal Variety, but even more of delight to host it in Blackpool ".

Acts lined up to appear include Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity, Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg and the cast of the West End hit Sister Act, singer Michael Buble and X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

Also on the bill are teen superstar Miley Cyrus, opera star Katherine Jenkins as well as comedians Jason Manford and Paddy McGuinness.

Sounds ghastly.

anyway, Laurie Mansfield, life president of organisers The Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, said: "Blackpool was the location of the first Royal Variety Performance outside London in 1955 and we are delighted to be returning there, the home of British variety."

The show will be aired on ITV some time after the actual night.
