Frankie Boyle's jibes about Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington might have caused public offence - but she didn't even know he'd made them until the media storm over the outrage.

The swimmer apparently spent more than a year in blissful ignorance of the comic's gag on Mock The Week that she looked like 'someone who's looking at themselves in the back of a spoon'.

But after watchdogs at the BBC Trust rebuked the comedian - so bringing the gag to her attention - she now says the corporation's governing body were not tough enough on him.

After receiving 75 complaints, the Editorial Standards Unit ruled Boyle's comments were 'offensive and unacceptable for broadcast'.

However, last week Boyle shrugged off the ruling, saying: 'Who are these people? What authority do they have to judge comedy?'

He also accused corporation executives of being scared of 'frightening the horses'.

Now Adlington's agent has written to the BBC Trust to complain their 'slap on the wrist' was too soft on the comic.

Her agent Rob Woodhouse tsaid: 'Frankie Boyle has made it very clear that he doesn't care what the BBC Trust says or does.

From our perspective the follow-up comments that he made are probably worse than his original remarks.'
