Ben Elton has slammed comedy panel shows for encouraging “mean” humour.
In a comment to the Daily Mail Elton targeted shows such as Mock the Week and 8 Out Of 10 Cats saying "nobody's allowed to do a proper routine any more. It's all down to these damn game shows. Comics are brought on and have to quip."
"They have to be mean to each other and about absolutely everything. They all have to desperately compete to say something mean - so you get a culture doing just that."
In recent weeks panel shows have repeatedly come under fire including Frankie Boyle’s now infamous Rebecca Adlington joke on Mock the Week and Miranda Hart’s comment about the Queen and Prince Phillip on Have I Got News For You.
