Eddie Izzard has called for there to be more comedy festivals that are separate from music ones.
Speaking to The Quietus Izzard said: “I think comedy has to be separate from music festivals. I want us to do comedy festivals. Because it's a 'mind' gig, and at music festivals everyone's completely off their faces so if and when they come to the comedy tent, we're always a poor relation.”
He also noticed that at music festivals comedy acts never get decent fees because “it’s all about the music…which is great but comedy should have its own.”
Comparing stand-up comedians to musicians, Izzard thinks comics could learn how to own the stage more: “We have to own the stage, because we've got no f**king back up, we're just naked. You've got to be so big, so confident, and have it in the pit of your stomach, that's where you've got to send out the confidence from.”
Eddie is currently on tour in the US.
