The first host to take to the stage in 15 years, Ricky Gervais had the majority of his audience in stitches on Sunday night as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globe awards…even the celebs at the butt of his jokes.

Gervais made a dig at Paul McCartney’s high profile divorce from Heather Mills last year saying: “We were on the same plane to get here. I was in first and he was behind me in coach. Well, he spent a lot of money last year.”

Backstage however, Gervais wrote on his blog that the ex-Beatle came up and hugged The Office creator saying he loved it but he added: “Never p*ss off a Beatle – rule 1.”

Other targets during the night were Angelina Jolie who took a knock for her adoptive tendencies: “You could be a little Asian child with no possessions and no money and you see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you think, ‘Mummy!’”

One of the biggest laughs however was directed at Mel Gibson as Gervais introduced his to the stage: “I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson,” referring to the actor’s past drinking habit.

Even if high-brow critics didn’t enjoy his turn at the helm, who cares when Kate Hudson says you’re “really fun” and Mickey ‘The Wrestler’ Rourke calls you “cool”!
