Tom Hanks’ production company Playtone Productions is reportedly developing a film about LA’s Comedy Store.

According to Pajiba, they are set to adapt William Knoedelseder’s book I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-up Comedys Golden Era which focuses on the late 1970’s and early 80’s life of Comedy Store founder Mitzi Shore.

Shore’s Comedy Store opened the doors for numerous established comedians including Jay Leno, David Letterman, Chevy Chase, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy and Tim Allen

However Shore was notorious for not paying her acts for their performances, believing that the Comedy Store “was something of a training ground - a college for comedians, a workshop for new material - and she felt no obligation to pay for their acts besides providing free drinks”.

Most tragically, Steve Lubetkin, a comic who was prohibited from performing at the club after going on strike committed suicide by jumping off of a hotel across the street and leaving a suicide note reading, “My name is Steve Lubetkin. I used to work at the Comedy Store.”

As yet there is no date set for the start of production.
