And the winner is…well we don’t know yet because the 2010 Academy Awards nominations have just been announced, via the Empire website, with only a teeny bit of comedy in the mix.

In The Loop the movie spin-off from Armando Iannucci’s political satire The Thick Of It has been given the nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Iannucci (pictured) co-wrote the film with Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche and they will be competing against An Education, Precious, District 9 and Up In The Air.

Also Disney/Pixar’s Up is ‘up’ for five awards including Best Animated Picture and Best Picture.

This year’s awards will see the expansion of the Best Picture category widened from five nominations to ten where Avatar predictably will be leading the fight against The Hurt Locker, Precious, A Serious Man, District 9, The Blind Side, An Education, Up In The Air, Inglourious Basterds and of course Up.

This year’s Oscars will be hosted by Steve Martin and 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin. Click here for the full run down of Oscar 2010 nominees.
