It was inevitable really; Toy Story 3 has rocketed to the top of the U.S. box office this weekend also giving Disney/Pixar its biggest-ever opening.
BBC News writes that the sequel raked in $109m (£73m) – storming past the nearest competition The Karate Kid which took $29m (£19.49m).
Fifteen years since Buzz Lightyear rocked Woody’s world (not in that way - sicko), Toy Story 3 finds Andy’s toys worrying about their future as their owner, now 17, heads off to college and the toys find themselves in a day care centre.
Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney said “Whether you’re a kid or a parent, you always come to a fork in the road where you make the decision of what to do about your toys. Therein lies the appeal of the movie.”
If the weekend is anything to go by Toy Story 3 is on target to be Disney/Pixar’s greatest triumph and with over three hundred characters, merchandising will send the revenue through the roof into infinity…and beyond!
Toy Story 3 opens in the UK July 19th.
