Broad City's Ilana Glazer On Why Hillary Clinton Is Still An Inspiration
If you’ve watched enough Broad City, it will come as no surprise that co-creator Ilana Glazer is a big fan of Hillary Clinton. In Season 3, (fictional) Ilana volunteers for her campaign, whilst (real life) Ilana was a vocal supporter during the election campaign.
Speaking in the woke-est teen mag of all time, Teen Vogue, Glazer has penned an op-ed about her surviving support for the politician after the election.
“When [Hillary Clinton] ran for president in 2016, after decades of being criticized and adapting to that criticism, of changing herself to increase her acceptability, the public said, “She’s adapted too much.” It was then I realized: This woman can’t win. But not just this woman: No woman can win”
She goes on to talk about how Clinton sacrificed herself to move the conversation forward. “Any time a person who represents a marginalized group gets back up after a defeat, it gives power to the next people in line coming from that margin.”
But what about T****? “ I’m actually grateful that the current administration has allowed racism and misogyny to become so transparent rather than coded and hidden. There’s no denying it now.”
Despite Hillary's loss, Glazer still hopes for a better future for women in politics. "During all those decades that Hillary was forced to define visual acceptability for women, she was also building the next step for me to stand on."
