Meet Mike Perry: The Artist Behind Broad City's Title Sequence
Ever wondered where those incredible title sequences at the beginning of Broad City come from? You know - the swirling, gyrating colourful animations that play when the music goes FOUR AND THREE AND TWO AND ONE ONE *does dance*.
Well, superfans, direct your attention to artists and animator Mr Mike Perry, who has been the brains behind the amazing title sequence since Season 1.
In an interview with Westwood, Perry explained how he first got the gig for Broad City.
“I made animated GIFs as a young computer user tends to do, so I understood the concept of how they work. I definitely did not really know what it meant to do an animation or how it worked.”
“From the beginning, I basically pitched a dozen concepts and direction and immediately they were just very supportive and excited.”
After creating numerous animations, the creative directors decided to change the sequence every episode - but that doesn’t mean the designs have to have anything to do with that episode’s content.
“Besides Comedy Central, Abbi and Ilana are running the ship. They don’t even want me to know what the episodes are about because they just want me to do me.”
Perry also dabbles in poetry, as well as illustration and animation. He is currently working on the title sequences for Season 4, which airs September 13th (!!!).
