The comedian had been writing his ‘News Week’ column for the paper since April and said on Twitter that he quit on Tuesday adding: ‘I didn’t think 600 words on page 54 were particularly important either way so announcing it seemed sanctimonious.’
His agents also confirmed that ‘Dave won’t be continuing the column,’ Chortle writes.
Meanwhile the comedians on Twitter have been having a whale of a time. Here’s a selection of some of the tweets about the News of The World’s closure doing the rounds:
Stephen Grant: ‘Let’s not forget the biggest victim in the closure of the News of the World is the Mock The Week intro.’
Dara O'Briain: ‘No, folks we’re not changing the MTW theme tune. In 2028 you’ll be watching it with your kids and can explain what ‘News of The World’ was.’
Nick Frost: ‘My Grampe used to call the News of the World, The Whores Gazette!’
Simon Pegg: ‘So that’s why the Met transferred Nicholas Angel!!!’
Edgar Wright: ‘Holy f*cking sh*t. The News Of The World is closing? Somewhere Hugh Grant is dancing to ‘Jump (For My Love)’. Wow.’
‘Queen_UK’: ‘One has closed the News of the World.’
And one from Dave Gorman too: ‘I wonder what famous ppl Rebekah Brooks has stuff on? From the way he’s standing by her, my guess is Rupert Murdoch.’
In lighter news however, Dave Gorman is the first guest on the brand new series of Robin Ince and Josie Long’s Utter Shambles which became available today. Hurrah!
Dave talks rediscovering his love for stand-up, Googlewhack and his nipples…but not about the News of the World because frankly we recorded it before it even happened, so don’t expect to hear anything about it or you’ll be disappointed. Just saying. The rest is bloody brilliant though. Download it now for free here.
