Of course, contestants were far too polite to actually come up with such a suggestion, instead Suzi Purcell actually submitted the word ‘mingers’. Phew.
Channel 4 actually said, ‘We have it on good authority that the word 'minge' is in the Oxford Dictionary. Just goes to show that as a Countdown viewer you learn something every day.’
Twitter was of course on overdrive but minge-gate does however come on the back of (un)timely comments by Countdown presenter Rachel Riley who, talking to The Mirror revealed that any tricksy words submitted by contestants are edited out of the show.
She said, ‘We've had some bad stuff come out. It's not too often, but if I'm just standing there next to the word “f**k” then that can't go out - and that has happened to me. On other occasions, if I giggle as the letters come up, then it's definitely out.’
Fortunately, there’s a low ‘minge’ threshold.
