Sad news this morning – one of Comedy Central’s most famous ‘roasters’ Greg Giraldo has died at age 44 after accidentally overdosing on prescription drugs.

The American comedian most noted for his appearances on many Comedy Central Roasts and as a judge on Last Comic Standing was hospitalised over the weekend, after collapsing on Saturday evening in his New Jersey hotel room, where he was performing at a club.

He was discovered by friends after he failed to show up for his performance.

According to the New York Post the incident however isn’t being treated as suicide.

Jim Norton posted a picture on twitter of his fellow comedian with the message: 'Greg Giraldo passed away today. This is the last photo of us together, taken June 28 at Noam's wedding. RIP buddy.'

Giraldo was a lawyer before he became a comedian and was regarded as one of Comedy Central’s top ‘roasters’ having laid into such celebs like William Shatner, David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.

He was also a frequent guest on The Late Show With David Letterman, Late Night With Conan O'Brian and The Howard Stern Show. He also appeared as a panellist on Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref.

The Giraldo family’s plans for a memorial service will reportedly be made public when they become available.

Our thoughts are with Greg’s family and friends.
