The absolutely fabulous Jennifer Saunders has been revealed as the writer of the upcoming Spice Girls musical.

BBC News writes that the comedian and BAFTA Fellow is ‘thrilled and terrified’ but said that it has been ‘great fun so far’.

Saunders said: ‘It is very exciting to be writing a musical that encompasses the music and energy of the biggest girl band of all time.

‘My daughters grew up with the Spice Girls - I had to write the book for them as well as myself.’

The musical titled Viva Forever is the brainchild of Mamma Mia! producer Judy Cramer, and is based on Spice Girls songs but will feature a ‘new contemporary story about friendship, celebrity and fame’.

Cramer added: ‘Having Jennifer Saunders on board is the best possible start Viva Forever can have.’

This isn’t the first time Saunders has had a ‘Girl Power’ experience. In 1997 she featured in the video for the Spice Girls’ Comic Relief single ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ as part of a parody group called the Sugar Lumps.

Viva Forever hopes to open in the West End in 2012.
