Ricky Gervais has raised doubts over the future of the US Office after Steve Carell exits the show at the end of the current season.

Talking on Piers Morgan’s new chat show, Digital Spy writes that the exec producer said: ‘[The show] can survive. Whether it should or not, I don’t know.’

The Golden Globes host also supported Carell’s decision to leave: ‘As a producer, I was expected to try and stop him because he is a big part of it. [But] I sent him an e-mail saying, ‘I think you are doing the right thing.’’

Earlier this week it was also revealed that Gervais will reprise his role as David Brent to make a cameo appearance on The Office next week in the States.

He told Morgan: ‘I bump into Steve Carell, it’s a little thing,’ and on his blog he wrote: ‘Blink and you’ll miss it,’ adding that it was ‘a pleasure to work with the great man [Carell].’

Season 5 of The Office continues in February on Comedy Central.
