Robin Williams is to receive the Stand-Up Icon Award at next month’s Comedy Awards. Which are different to the Chortle Awards just so you know even though they’re both about the business of being funny…

The stand-up-turned-actor will be taking home the gong on 28th April in New York. And it’s guaranteed so he doesn’t have to rock up in the hope that he’ll win which must be quite a relief as he’ll be able to practise his speech in advance.

Viacom Entertainment Group Executive Producer Casey Patterson – there are a lot of words in his title so he must be important – says, ‘Academy Award winner, beloved TV star and passionate activist, Robin used stand-up comedy to literally change the world with Comic Relief.

’Robin Williams is more than an icon... he is one of the most important comedic voices of our time. We're thrilled, and just a little bit scared, to be honouring Robin at The Comedy Awards this year.’

Why they’d be scared we don’t know: does he carry a pointy stick or something?

Last year, Eddie Murphy got the award which was presented to him by Tracy Morgan of 30 Rock fame.
