And so, comedy naturally reared its ugly head with the winner being Channel Four's Black Mirror: The National Anthem, named as best comedy.
The Charlie Brooker-scripted dramedy was billed as ‘a twisted parable for the Twitter age’ and saw the British Prime Minister face a dilemma when a member of the royal family is kidnapped. You may have seen and gasped.
In the Best Sitcom category, Channel Four’s Friday Night Dinner, starring The Inbetweeners' Simon Bird did the business.
Elsewhere, Christina Ricci’s Pan Am won the Golden Rose for best series despite being dissed almost everywhere, the CBBC’s kids show Horrible Histories won for Best Children’s Television Series and The Million Pound Drop Live also picked up an award for best gameshow. And a lot of champagne was drunk and bulls*** spoken.
The annual television festival, now in its 51st year, takes place in Lucerne - with the coveted Golden Rose awards handed out on the final day.
