Tim Minchin's musical Matilda has broken West End records by taking home seven Olivier awards at the prestigious ceremony last night.

Tim Minchin co-wrote the musical with Dennis Kelly which won best new musical while its director Matthew Warchus also won.

Maybe we've really not been paying attention but we didn't realise Tim Minchin was musical-orientated but we're thrilled to be put right. Please let us know when David Walliams is involved in neuro-science.

The show took home gongs for best actress in a musical, presented jointly to the four child actresses who share the title role as well as best actor best actor for Bertie Carvel for his cross-dressing performance as Matilda's headmistress. Now we're getting Tim Minchin's involvement!

Other awards were for choreography, set design and sound design. but as we all know by now, those are the least interesting award categories where everyone goes to the bar or eats their dinner.

Tim Minchin joked it was hard to follow the four 'best actress' on stage, saying, 'These maggots make it very hard for us to be attractive to listen to.'

In other Olivier news, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller won for Frankenstein; Les Miserables picked up a Radio 2 audience award, Derren Brown received the best entertainment accolade for Svengali and Brian May played the guitar to celebrate the existence of We Will Rock You.

Obviously, that's just the tip of the iceberg there's lots of other stuff happening which you can find online.
