20 Years Later: Sex And The City Creator Answers Carrie's Biggest Questions
Today marks 20 YEARS since Sex And The City hit the silver screen.
If you grew up looking for your Mr. Big and dreaming of starting a career in New York (or maybe you were just getting dumped on Post-It notes), you'll know the name Candace Bushnell. Writer of the New York Observer column that sparked the inimitable TV series, she gave a voice to any woman feeling a bit existential. So all of us, then.
We had lunch with Candace and Red magazine when she visited London in 2015 and she kindly answered Carrie Bradshaw's most existential questions. Two decades later, she's much more sure of the answers.
'When will waiting for the one... be done?' (Episode 12, Season 6)
'When I was doing Sex and the City, I used to think 'why are there all these great single women, and no great men to marry them?'. 20 years later, that's still the question.
'When people say they haven't met the right man, that's because there isn't a right man. There are certain things we can't control. Women, there is nothing wrong with you. Don't let it define you, because it's not right.'
'Why are we all should-ing all over ourselves?' (Episode 15, Season 6)
'There are times when you feel like you're not going anywhere. It's just about sticking with it. Sometimes you need to tread water, and that's okay. There's a part of your psyche that is looking out for you. Focus on what's on your plate, and make that the best it can be.'
'Where's the line between 'professional girlfriend' and just plain 'professional'?'
'Your career is like a longterm relationship; there are ups and downs.'
'To be in a couple, do you have to put your single self on a shelf?' (Episode 14, Season 4)
Candace pulled no punches with this one: 'I'd rather not be with a guy than have to change my personality'.
'When it comes to finance and dating, why do we keep investing?' (Episode 1, Season 6)
Candace reckons there's something else you should be paying into: 'Your career is a savings account - you have to invest in yourself'.
'In a city of great expectations, is it time to settle for what you can get?' (Episode 9, Season 1)
'There's a certain point, when you reach your mid-40s or 50s, when you have an existential crisis. You just have to reinvent yourself and find new meaning in life. It's a bit like being an adolescent again.'
'When it comes to life and love, why do we believe our worst reviews?' (Episode 6, Season 5)
The most important growth you have is learning to like and accept yourself. In my 20s and 30s, I hated my body. When you're older, there's more self-acceptance, you know yourself better and you become more self-actualised. You're able to impact the world. There are so many things that we must develop on our own that others can't give you.'
Candace, you're our spirit animal.
