Currently in its fifth season, 30 Rock is truly firing on all cylinders and can rightly sit among the very best US comedy imports of all time, such as Frasier, Seinfeld, Friends and The Simpsons.

Named after the New York address of the towering art deco skyscraper where NBC Studios is based, 30 Rock was created by Tina Fey, based on her experiences as former head writer and performer for Saturday Night Live.

The plot revolves around the cast and crew of fictional sketch comedy series TGS with Tracy Jordan, with Fey playing flustered and flaky head writer Liz Lemon.

Always on the back foot, Liz is constantly caught between trying to manage the constant tantrums from the frankly unmanageable TGS  team, placate suave but controlling network executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) and maintain some pretence of having a vaguely successful love life.

It’s rare to have a cast so uniformly impressive but 30 Rock delivers on all fronts. From Tracy Morgan’s childishly thick comedian and Jack McBrayer’s optimistic and naïve redneck page, to Jane Krakowski’s borderline-psychopathic diva and Fey herself, each character is vividly brought to life by an effortlessly funny team of performers with natural comic timing.
