Description
His well meaning but meddling parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts), live right across the road and spend most of their time infiltrating their son's home to an extent unrivalled in television history.
To make matters worse, Ray's obsessive -compulsive older brother Robert (Brad Garrett) also lives with them and makes the most of his police training and surveillance equipment to detect whether or not poor Ray is home.
Ray's long suffering wife Debra, tolerates the daily interruptions but there's only so much a woman can take without resorting to violence!
Despite numerous attempts to slip away unnoticed and precise plans that make escape from Colditz look easy, Ray and Debra always get caught. The Barone family can run but they can't hide - at least not whilst they still live across the road from their folks!
Star of the show, Ray Romano started his career in comedy almost by accident. Always confident that he could make people laugh, Ray made an impromptu stand-up appearance at an open mike night at a local comedy club, where he wowed the crowd and won first prize. This encouraged Ray to take the circuit professionally where he spent many years as one of the most dependable rib ticklers on the New York club scene.
His big break came after appearing on the Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson. David Letterman became his biggest fan which proved to be most useful as he and CBS jointly signed Ray to develop an idea for a possible sitcom. The rest is history.
What makes ELR so successful (the show's received a whopping six Emmy nominations) and different from everything else on your screens is its keen portrayal of family life and the fact it is based on his Romano's real life relations, whose oddities have long fueled his stand-up comedy. His Mom and Dad still live in the Forest Hills house where Ray grew up. His divorced older brother Richard (the city cop upon whom the show's brother Robert is based) still lives with them which is more than strange at 41!
The ideas for the comedy were driven by Ray's true life experiences of his mom going through his personal belongings, his dad listening to his answerphone messages and his brother always moaning about living life in his shadow. What better way to repay them than by sending them up on national television!
