David Hyde Pierce portrays Frasier’s younger brother Dr. Niles Crane, possibly the only man just as pompous and pretentious as Frasier himself.
Throughout the show’s run Niles is constantly battling with his unseen battleaxe wife Maris while harbouring feelings for his dad’s hired home-care worker Daphne.
Eventually Niles divorces Maris and after years of hiding his crush finally marries Daphne.
David was born on April 3rd 1959 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the youngest of four children.
He studied acting at Yale University and after graduating in 1981, he moved to New York, making his professional and Broadway debut in 1982.
Since then he has appeared on stage in countless productions, including Hamlet, The Seagull, Tartuffe and The Cherry Orchard in New York, Moscow, Leningrad, and Tokyo.
Taking his craft to Los Angeles in 1991, he soon landed the role of Niles Crane, a portrayal that has earned him three Emmy Awards, several American Comedy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In fact, David holds the record for most SAG Award nominations, at 18!
David has also enjoyed success on the big screen, with parts in Sleepless in Seattle, Wolf, Nixon, Down With Love, A Bug’s Life, and an uncredited turn as the voice of Dr. Abe Sapien in Hellboy.
He currently lives in New York and Lois Angeles with his long-term partner Brian Hargrove and their two Wheaten Terriers, Maude and Mabel.
