John Mahoney portrays Frasier’s widowed father, Martin Crane, an ex cop forced into retirement after being shot on duty.


Due to the nature of his injuries Martin begrudgingly moves in with his son Frasier, whose well-cultured and sophisticated attitude clashes with his own ordinary, blue-collar ways.


A veteran performer, John has captivated film, television and stage audiences equally ever since he began his acting career in the 70s.


He was born over here in Blackpool on June 20th 1940 and grew up in Manchester, where he developed an early interest in the stage, performing in local youth theatre.


At the age of nineteen he moved to the United States where he served a brief stint in the U.S. Army, before settling in Chicago where he earned a degree in English literature at Quincy College and a Master's from Western Illinois University.


He then took a job as an editor of medical trade publications for doctors and college professors.


It wasn’t until the age of 37 that John felt the need for a change, deciding to pursue his life-long love for the theatre as a career.


After taking classes at Chicago's St. Nicholas Theatre, fellow actor John Malkovich encouraged him in 1977 to join Steppenwolf Theatre, where he still works today, having appeared in around thirty plays.


In 1986 he won a coveted Tony award for best actor in a play called The House of Blue Leaves.


John also has extensive film credits in his CV, appearing is films such as Tin Men opposite Richard Dreyfuss; Moonstruck, opposite Cher; The Hudsucker Proxy, and Barton Fink for the Coen Brothers; Roman Polanski’s Frantic; In The Line of Fire with Clint Eastwood; and Antz with Woody Allen to name a few.
