Full Biography
Emmy-Award winner Kelsey Grammer, plays our eponymous star of the show - a pompous yet neurotic and lovable psychiatrist who first grabbed our attention back in 1984 as one of the barflies in Sam's Boston tavern in hit show Cheers.
Following the break up of his marriage back in Boston, his plans for his new life as a bachelor based in Seattle are slightly scuppered when he is obliged to take in his father, ex-police officer Martin, who had to retire and is unable to live by himself owing to an injury caused by being shot.
However, Frasier’s career takes off in the world of broadcasting when he lands a job hosting a popular radio talk show on KACL 780AM, during which he can repeatedly be heard saying the immortal words “I’m listening” and equally familiar sign off: “wishing you good mental health”.
Kelsey Grammer was born on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands on February 21st 1955, the son of Sally, a singer, and Frank, a musician, who divorced when he was young.
He was raised by his mother and grandfather, first in New Jersey, then in Florida, but after the death of his grandfather, the 12-year-old Grammer revealed a love for high art to rival his psychiatrist alter ego, in particular the works of William Shakespeare.
With the encouragement of his English and drama teachers, he decided to pursue acting as a career and spent two years at the famous Juilliard School, before performing classic plays by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw with a theatre company in San Diego.
He soon began performing in countless plays on Broadway and across the United States.
When he landed his spin-off series from Cheers, Kelsey won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and a People’s Choice Award for Favourite Male in a New Television Series.
In total he has won three Emmys and two Golden Globes for his portrayal of Frasier and has been nominated for 12 Emmys for his portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane in three different series: Cheers,Wings and Frasier.
He has also reached an incredible milestone: he has portrayed the same character for 20 years, tied only with actor James Arness of Gunsmoke.
Outside of Frasier, Kelsey is also known to comedy fans as the voice of murderous Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons and to comic fans as playing Dr. Hank “Beast” McCoy in X Men: The Last Stand.
He currently lives in the Los Angeles area with his third wife Camille and daughter
