Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) has just arrived in New York after jilting her fiancé at the altar and has decided to move in with Monica (Courteney Cox). Ross (David Schwimmer), whose lesbian former wife, Carol, is pregnant with his baby, is besotted with Rachel and keeps trying to tell her.
But after messing it up a few times, he settles for the love of a pet monkey (Marcel). Joey (Matt LeBLanc) is struggling as a struggling actor but manages to land a V.D advert and job as Al Pacino’s butt double, while Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) is busy being a masseuse and averting chaos caused by her evil twin, Ursula. Chandler (Matthew Perry) breaks up with his eardrum-shattering girlfriend, Janice (Maggie Wheeler), who we see a lot more of in later seasons. At the end of Season 1, Chandler accidentally lets slip that Ross is in love Rachel, who on reflection - and after a date in the laundrette - decides she quite likes him too.
