All The Times South Park Totally Destroyed Gender Norms
Let's face it: South Park isn't exactly known for its cultural sensitivity. Its creators have gone out of their way to make it offensive in every possible way.
But over time the show has revealed some feminist leanings, with events in the town often demonstrating the idiocy of failing to tackle gender norms.
Take the episode The Hobbit.
Wendy tries to show that women altering their appearance using Photoshop creates unrealistic body image problems for girls, but is called a "hater". After appearing on the news and trying to convince her classmates, Wendy eventually gives in and Photoshops herself.
Things don't return to normal and stupidity wins, but the show relentlessly shows how horrible these trends can be for young women.
Then how about The Cissy?
Cartman pretends to be transgender in order to use the girls' bathroom because he is sick of the stalls in the boys' room being occupied. This sparks a huge debate and the creation of a transgender bathroom, but ultimately the school decides that everyone should just be able to use the bathroom they feel most comfortable with.
Another bathroom is then created for people who have a problem with this, so that no one else has to put up with their intolerance: the cissy bathroom.
Or consider Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society.
Wendy's friend, Bebe, starts to develop breasts, and the boys at school start going crazy. Like, caveman crazy (you saw that picture above, right?).
It takes Bebe wearing a box to school to get the boys to calm down, and the episode nails the point that policing women's bodies is totally unfair.
And what about Eat, Pray, Queef?
The men around town are filled with rage when their favourite fart-driven show, Terrance and Phillip, is replaced by The Queef Sisters.
It takes them a long time to understand the sexist double standard, but ultimately Stan and Randy recognise the problem and gather the men of South Park together to sing a charity song, "Queef Free".
Even though things don't always change in the school or the town, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are savvy enough to show that the status quo isn't good enough.
It's fair to say that not all of South Park's eps are this on point when it comes to gender norms, but these examples show that there are some big problems to be dealt with.
