British Festivals v American Festivals: How Do They Compare?
You wouldn't think there would be too many differences in music festival culture from country to country. After all, music transcends languages, so why wouldn't everything else that goes along with a festival?
However, if you've been to festivals in both the UK and the US, you. Will. KNOW. that the experiences are more than a little different. Ahead of the release of new movie from the creators of The Inbetweeners The Festival Movie on August 14th, let's compare British festivals with those from our American friends across the pond…
1. We'll start with the fashion
America usually has the benefit of glorious sunshine in the summer months, not to mention that festivals don't generally happen in fields, so everyone can dance around in sandals and look cute af. Meanwhile, in the UK, we keep Hunter in business with our summer welly needs.
2. Which brings us nicely to the weather…
America definitely wins here, though they're not as resilient as us Brits – they'll actually CANCEL festivals over a little rain. Remember, USA: life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain. Deep, right?
3. Then there's the drinking culture. Did you know that, at some American festivals, they have DESIGNATED DRINKING AREAS?!
As in you actually have to stay in a fenced-off bar area to consume alcohol. Wow. One point to Team UK.
4. The loos do tend to be a lot cleaner at American festivals
Maybe because the weather is better and there aren't 100,000 people in poo-covered wellies using the same loo. An advantage for sure.
5. And the parties are legendary
You can actually go to Coachella for the weekend without a ticket and still have a great time party hopping. From the exclusive Neon Carnival, to events thrown by brands like Moschino, Revolve and Boohoo, the desert-based festival really has its after party scene down.
6. But have you ever seen a party IN a loo at an American festival?
Eastern Electrics really upped the portaloo experience this year when they hid a rave tent behind the toilet doors. Genius and only in the UK.
7. And it does feel like there's a lot more *~bAnTeR~* at British festivals
Always at someone's expense, but that's just the British sense of humour, innit?
8. Though there's definitely a bigger chance of spotting a celeb at an American festival
Maybe just because more of them live there?
9. But the line-ups are basically the same everywhere, aren't they?
Whatever your festival location, the music's gonna be great and that's really all that matters.
10. Just remember: America was responsible for the disaster that was Fyre Festival
