The Simpsons Had The Best Songs Of Any TV Show Ever
The Simpsons always knew how to make us laugh and cry, but damn, that show really knew how to make us sing along.
The songs on The Simpsons have never been bettered by any TV show, and they're a damn sight more catchy than a lot of bands around today.
"Oh, boo. Go home to your grammaphone, Grandpa!" Yeah, well jokes on you - we've got a 45 of the best Simpsons songs, so nyahh. You can keep your Snoop Doggy Dog and all that hippity-hoppity nonsense. Pass us a Flaming Moe instead.
Episode S9E15: “The Last Temptation of Krust”
Can you name the truck with four wheel drive, smells like a steak and seats thirty-five...
Sung by the great Hank Williams Jr., Canyonero is about the most American thing you’ve ever heard. It’s a pitch-perfect skewering of ridiculous SUV adverts, where bigger is better and there’s no room for anything else, ironically.
2. Baby On Board
Episode S5E1: “Homer’s Barbershop Quartet”
I’m telling you it’s mighty nice. Each trip’s a trip to paradise, with my baby on board.
It’s not funny, but then it’s not supposed to be. What it is is a genuinely brilliant piece of barbershop close harmony. Who doesn’t get hit with a wave of nostalgia when they hear Baby On Board? No one, that’s who.
3. See My Vest
Episode S6E20: “Two Dozen and One Greyhounds”
Grizzly bear underwear, turtles’ necks, I’ve got my share.
If you’ve ever been shopping and you’ve not been tempted to bust into a verse of See My Vest, then you’re a filthy rotten liar and I WILL FIGHT YOU. It’s also an amazing juxtaposition of catchy show tune melody and Burns’ irrepressible evil: he’s gonna kill those adorable puppies, and here we are tapping along.
4. Dr Zaius
Episode S7E19: “A Fish Called Selma”
Can I play the piano anymore? Of course you can. Well I couldn’t before!
This is one of those scenes that randomly jumps into your head and makes you laugh apropos of nothing. Perhaps Troy McClure’s finest moment, and easily one of the funniest songs in The Simpsons’ oeuvre. When Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off! Comes to the West End, we’ll be first in line for tickets.
5. Lisa’s Union Strike Song
Episode S4E17: “Last Exit to Springfield”
So we’ll march day and night by the big cooling tower. They have the plant, but we have the power.
We don’t know what Jeremy Corbyn’s favourite episode of The Simpsons is, but we’d bet that it’s this one. Lisa’s Union Strike Song (it doesn’t have a proper name) a sad, sombre folk song, chronicling the trade union battle between the hero named Homer and the villain called Burns.
6. We Put The Spring In Springfield
Episode S8E5: “Bart After Dark”
We’re the sauce on your steak, we’re the cheese in your cake. We put the ‘Spring’ in Springfield.
This song proves one fundamental truth: if you want to stop people from destroying a burlesque house, cobble together a catchy cabaret song carefully laying out all your arguments for saving the establishment.
Episode S4E12: “Marge vs. the Monorail”
What about us brain-dead slobs? You’ll all be given cushy jobs!
Monorail… monorail… monorail… monorail… need we say more?
8. Flaming Moe’s
Episode S3E10: “Flaming Moe’s”
Happiness is just a Flaming Moe away...
The Simpsons nail the perfect Cheers parody, from the schmaltzy 80s theme song to the pastel visuals. And the lyrics about drinking yourself to death to escape the pain of living. Man, Cheers was darker than we remember.
9. Happy Birthday Lisa
Episode S3E1: “Stark Raving Dad”
Lisa, it’s your birthday. Happy birthday, Lisa.
Top fact: this is not actually Michael Jackson singing. Allegedly due to complicated recording contracts, Michael recorded the voices for the show, but when it came to singing Happy Birthday Lisa, his official soundalike was brought in.
10. You’re Checking In
Episode S9E1: “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson”
No more pills or alcohol, no more pot or Demorol, no more stinking fun at all!
Does anyone else think this looks a little like Charlie Sheen? A premonition? The Simpsons certainly has a knack for predicting the future, but maybe from a legal perspective we should deny any resemblance between the singer and Mr Sheen. But come on...
11. Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart?
Episode S5E13: “Homer and Apu”
Homer’s a delightful fella, sorry ‘bout the salmonella.
We need the Kwik-E-Mart!
