David Bowie's Last Project Was A SpongeBob SquarePants Musical And It Looks Awesome
It's a sad day, as the world mourns the legend that is David Bowie. It has been revealed that his last project was working on a SpongeBob SquarePants musical, and producers have described it as ‘a celebration of unbridled hope, unexpected heroes, and pure theatrical invention'.
Nickelodeon has confirmed that the ‘rousing tale of a simple sea sponge’ will have an all-star songwriting line-up, also featuring Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and the Flaming Lips.
Apparently, Bowie became a fan of SpongeBob after watching it with his daughter. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Nickelodeon’s President of Content Development, Russell Hicks, said: “All of those amazing composers are fans of SpongeBob... Music has always been an important part of the show and everyone saw this as a real creative challenge ... We have a story and a subplot, but it’s all spiced with the particular flavourings of the SpongeBob universe.”
It will open at Chicago’s Oriental theatre on 7th June, and run for at least one month, with the aim of transferring the show to Broadway. No cast members have been announced yet, so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for that.
