Look, Phoebe and Mike's wedding was one of the most perfectly imperfect, heart-wrenchingly beautiful moments that occured in the entire ten seasons of Friends.
BUT WE LOVED DAVID, TOO, OK, WE BLOODY LOVED DAVID AND HIS STUPID JOKES AND SILLY GLASSES AND QUIETLY JOVIAL DEMEANOUR.
So we were a *little* miffed when David came back from Minsk, attempted to propose to Pheebs and she'd already given her heart to a literal Bag of Crap. And it turns out so was Hank Azaria, who played the scientist. He didn't know that would happen AT ALL.
Azaria just told HuffPost, “I didn’t know that was the end of David. The plan always was kind of to bring him back.”
“I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill,” said Azaria, who added, “As opposed to the other way around.”
So Hank was left devastated too?!
“It actually did sting a little bit,” said Azaria. “Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me [laughs], but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.”
Mike/Paul Rudd *was* pretty cute, though. “He certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe’s love.”
Azaria graciously added: “He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy.”
So now you know, folks (know to go kick Paul Rudd in the shins a little bit, amiright, guys? Guys?!).
